SINGAPORE: The Deputy Chairman of the People’s Association, Mr Lim Swee Say, has explained why the PA had decided to disclose the identity of the staff member who was linked to former Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer.
Mr Lim said the issue of disclosing Ms Laura Ong’s identity was debated at length by the association’s management.
Mr Palmer resigned from the People’s Action Party on Wednesday after admitting that he had an improper relationship with her.
Mr Lim described Ms Ong as a well—performing staff member, who had been promoted and assigned important duties.
He said while he did not want to add on to Ms Ong’s pain by disclosing her identity, the PA’s management owed the staff members an explanation, as Mr Palmer’s case had attracted much public attention.
"We have over 2,000 key employees and they also want to know what has happened and who. So in other words, we owe it to our staff to let them know. Otherwise, they all will be speculating. So we decided to inform our staff, let them know who is involved and what has happened," he said.
