NUS student—led Christian group suspended over insensitive posters

SINGAPORE: A student—led Christian religious group at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has been suspended following investigations over posters that were deemed "insensitive and disrespectful".

In a written reply to Parliament, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said police investigations into the NUS Campus Crusade for Christ are ongoing.

He said the students involved in putting up the posters around campus and on the group’s website, have been counselled.

The group has also since apologised.

Mr Heng said the university’s management took the occasion to remind the wider NUS community of the importance of being respectful to the beliefs and views of others.

He said schools and institutes of higher learning here regularly emphasise the importance of social cohesion, tolerance and sensitivity through both formal and informal curriculum.

Mr Heng added maintaining racial and religious harmony is critical in the context of a multi—racial, multi—religious Singapore.

"This incident reminds all of us not to take racial and religious harmony for granted, and that we must be sensitive and vigilant on matters of race and religion," he said.
