Noise levels, littering cases down at Robertson Quay

SINGAPORE: Residents of Robertson Quay in downtown Singapore may finally be getting a better night’s sleep and a cleaner estate.

A joint effort between the National Environment Agency and police has helped to tackle the twin problems of noise and litterbugs. It is a popular spot for young merrymakers, especially late into the night.

NEA has doubled the number of rubbish bins lining the Jiak Kim and Robertson Bridge.

Late last year, its officers have also stepped up patrols in the area, leading to an 80 per cent drop in the number of litterbugs caught.

Eight litterbugs were nabbed in the fourth quarter of 2011, down from 42 during the previous quarter.

Marcuson Seah, a jogger who frequents the area, said: "There’s a tremendous improvement on the littering part. But my main concern is the youngsters. After drinking, they tend to break the beer bottles, whatever glass bottles they will break it. That’s the main concern, causing injury to children."
