New treatment option for tennis elbow sufferers
A new treatment option is now available for sufferers of tennis elbow - a painful condition when tendons in the elbow are overworked.
The new minimally invasive procedure available at the Singapore General Hospital, is called "percutanbeous ultrasonic tenotomy" and can be performed in about 15 to 20 minutes.
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia.
It involves the use of ultrasound energy to cut and remove the tissue which is increasingly believed to be responsible for the persistent pain.
Senior Consultant at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr Joyce Koh, says patients who undergo this procedure also recover faster when compared to traditoonal open surgery.
Patients who underwent the procedure had no recurrence of the condition during the one year followup period.
The hospital sees about 20 to 30 patients with the condition each month.
