MRT train service on North South Line disrupted after fire at Newton MRT

Northbound train services between Marina Bay and Toa Payoh on the North South Line resumed at 11.20am today.

The disruption came after a cable caught fire in the tunnel at Newton station.

The Land Transport Authority said the small localised fire involved some electrical wiring.

Some smoke from the fire got into Newton station, but there was no fire in the station itself.

Train operator SMRT says the incident happened at around 9.05 this morning.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were informed of the incident at around 9am

It said the fire occurred about five metres away from the platform of the station.

The fire was extinguished at around 10am using fire extinguishers and a small quantity of foam.

SCDF added that there were no reports on injuries.
