MPs file 450 'cuts' for COS debate

Issues concerning healthcare, manpower and transport are expected to dominate the coming debates in Parliament, as discussions on the various government ministries' expenditure for the coming financial year begin this afternoon after the Budget statement is approved.

Members of Parliament will spend seven days debating the budgets of the Government's 16 ministries.

These are known as the Committee of Supply debates.

MPs have filed about 450 'cuts' - a call for a S$100 reduction in a ministry's budget - and will use the opportunity to express their views about the programmes of each ministry.

The minister and other office holders then respond, after which an MP withdraws it if he is satisfied with the reply, allowing Parliament to approve the budgets.

This year's debate will take a thematic approach, organised along five themes - Trusted Government; Safe and Secure Singapore; A Nation of Opportunity; Liveable City, Endearing Home; and A Caring Society.

A Ministry of Communications and Information spokesperson said this year's approach shows how ministries have coordinated to "deliver integrated policies for ... Singaporeans".
