SINGAPORE: Minister of State Halimah Yacob said more work needs to be done to improve total fertility rates in Singapore besides fine—tuning work—life balance.
She was speaking to reporters at a post—National Day dialogue attended by some 60 women participants from 11 organisations and six institutes of higher learning.
"I really think we should shift the conversation because I think when we look at marriage and having children purely as a cost benefit analysis... then our conversation becomes different. But when we look at it as values and principles... what is it that’s fundamental to us in life, then it’s a different perspective," she said.
Madam Halimah also said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s rally speech on social mobility will help keep the Singaporean dream alive.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Grace Fu said most women like that some of the basic values are being discussed by the Prime Minister.
"What kind of Singapore we’d like to be, how we should behave with one another, how we can build on the kampong spirit. These are issues that many women are interested in and they like to see that the children in their families have a brighter future in Singapore," she said.
