SINGAPORE : More motorists were caught for drinking—driving this year.
2,141 motorists were arrested for drink—driving between January and September this year, compared to 2,056 motorists during the same period last year.
For the first nine months of this year, there were 79 drink—driving related accidents which resulted in 12 fatalities.
To counter this problem, authorities have launched a campaign to remind motorists not to drink and drive, especially during the year—end festive period.
Also in the pipeline are more initiatives to ensure road safety.
Minister in Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs, Mr S Iswaran, said: "Drink driving is not the only danger to road safety. Other clear and present threats on our roads include reckless driving, red—running, as well as excessive speeding. To address these issues, the Traffic Police has been holistically reviewing its strategies. In the coming months, more details will be shared on further measures to help promote safer roads."
