More citizens looking for jobs could be one of the reasons for higher unemployment rate: Tan Chuan-Jin
More citizens have entered the jobs market, and this could be one of the reasons behind a rise in the unemployment rate for Singaporeans in the first quarter of this year.
Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin said this in response to a parliamentary question from MP for Tampines GRC, Irene Ng.
"Higher job search activity, higher wages, more vacancies and greater ability of flexible work arrangement in a tight labour market, encourage more citizens to enter the labour market. As a job search process may take some time, some slight increases in quarterly unemployment rate is expected."
Minister Tan also said that economic restructuring in Singapore has inevitably resulted in the merging, or closing down of some companies.
He said this could also contribute to more people being out of work.
That said, he pointed out that many new companies have also been set up.
And it was therefore important that workers are equipped with relevant skills, to take on new job opportunities.
He added that the Government will help provide training through its Continuing Education and Training programme under the Workforce Development Agency.
