MDA to require Breakfast Network to cease online service over registration non-compliance

MDA to require Breakfast Network to cease online service over registration non-compliance

The Media Development Authority, MDA, says it will require that socio-political commentary websiteBreakfast Network to shut down.

That's because Breakfast Network has decided not to submit its registration form.

MDA notified the owners of the website to register under the Broadcasting (Class Licence) Notification on the 26th of November.

And this deadline was extended to the 17th of December at its request.

But MDA says the website has decided not to submit the registration form, and therefore will not be complying with the registration notification.

As part of the registration, the owners of Breakfast Network would be required to undertake not to receive foreign funding for its provision, management or operation.

MDA had said the undertaking was meant to prevent the site from being controlled or influenced by foreign entities or funding.

The aim, MDA had said, was to ensure that Singapore politics remain a matter for Singaporeans alone.

BreakFast Network announced yesterday it was shutting down.

In a post, its Editor, Bertha Henson, said it was a tough decision to make but that the site owners needed to take a breather and re-organise.

The website will go back to its original mission of pro bono writing.
