Malaysia police have asked sex bloggers Alvin Tan and his girlfriend, Vivian Lee, to surrender to the Kuala Lumpur police for their offensive Ramadan greeting on Facebook.

According to the Malaysian Insider, the police wanted to investigate Tan and Lee for causing disharmony, disunity and hatred on grounds of religion.

Last Thursday, Tan and Lee,  both Malaysians, posted a photograph of themselves eating “bak kut teh” (herbal pork soup) with the words “Selamat Berbuka Puasa” - a Malay greeting for breaking fast - and the “halal” logo, prompting attacks by netizens for its insensitivity toward religious matters.

They have since issued an apology, calling it their “stupidest stunt”. Their Facebook page was also closed down due to “strong negative feedback”.

Tan, 25, and Lee, 24, were summoned to appear before the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission on Monday where they were reportedly grilled for close to 12 hours.

The couple could be prosecuted for displaying offensive pictures and words under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

If convicted, they could be fined up to RM50,000 or be given a one year jail sentence, or both.
