SINGAPORE: Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew will attend the two-day 19th ASEAN Transport Ministers' (ATM) Meeting and associated meetings with ASEAN dialogue partners in Pakse, Laos from December 19 to 20.
The ministers will discuss issues on regional co-operation in air, land, and maritime transport, as well as transport facilitation initiatives.
They are also expected to sign the Protocol to Implement the Eighth Package of Commitments on Air Transport Services under the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Services (AFAS), to support the liberalisation of aviation-related services and ASEAN's broader goal of economic liberalisation and integration.
The ASEAN transport ministers will also meet with their counterparts from China, Japan and South Korea to discuss transport co-operation matters.
The ASEAN ministers and China are expected to sign Protocol 2 of the ASEAN-China Air Transport Agreement, which was concluded in September 2012.
When ratified, parties will be able to operate flights beyond specified points in ASEAN and China to points in third countries.
This will facilitate and enhance the growing flow of people, trade, and investments between Asia and the rest of the world.
Protocol 1 was concluded in May 2010 and entered into force in August 2011. It allows parties to operate unlimited flights between ASEAN and China.
Mr Lui will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Land Transport Authority of Singapore, and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. - CNA/al
