Lui Tuck Yew gives update on three-runway system at Changi

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew says the land preparation phase for Changi Airport's third runway will take a significant amount of time.

He gave this update at the committee of supply debate.

"We have found from recently-completed extensive tests that the soil condition on site is very much poorer than expected."

Mr Lui says a contractor will be appointed in the middle of the year to carry out land preparation works.

The target is still to have the three-runway system completed around the early 2020s.

In the interim, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, CAAS, is working wth various stakeholders to optimise the capacity of the existing two runways.

Mr Lui says passenger growth at Changi Airport is expected at between four and six per cent a year for the rest of this decade.
