SINGAPORE: Singapore Table Tennis Association’s (STTA) president Er Dr Lee Bee Wah has been re—elected for a third two—year term.
She has been in office since 2008.
Under her leadership, Singapore won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and two bronze medals at the recently—concluded London Games.
Er Dr Lee is actively looking for a successor to bring the sport forward.
The election was held at the Association’s Biennial General Meeting, and four new faces have joined the committee.
Among them is the newly—elected deputy president, Ms Low Yen Ling, who is also a Member of Parliament for Choa Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency.
The 38—year—old, who is also the CEO of Business China Singapore, is one of those in the running for the presidency.
But the current president has not set a specific timeline for the changeover.
"I would like to groom (the) successor to such a period that he or she is comfortable to lead STTA. So as soon as my successor is ready, I will vacate," she said.
The STTA’s priorities include grooming more and younger athletes, raising more funds and getting more sponsors, and even getting a new and bigger premises for the Association in Toa Payoh.
"Because I played table tennis, this is an area that I have great passion in and hopefully that would also allow me to contribute to really extending wider outreach in the community," said Ms Low. "(And) as what (the) president has said, we are always canvassing hard for more sponsorships."
