SINGAPORE: The leases of four hawker centres ended on Saturday.
The leases are at Block 207 New Upper Changi Road, Block 117 Aljunied Ave 2, Block 20 Ghim Moh Road and Block 503 West Coast Drive.
However, patrons can still enjoy affordable food from Sunday, as the majority of hawkers have taken up tenancy offer to continue operating.
More than 75 per cent of stalls in the four centres will continue business as usual.
From June 1, the government takes charge of those centres, previously operating under the Stall Ownership Scheme.
The centres in Aljunied and West Coast have been offered new three-year tenancies for hawkers to continue their business at existing stalls.
But the centres are expected to be closed for up to two months for renovations to improve facilities.
The centres at Upper Changi Road and Ghim Moh are being offered a four-month transitional tenancy until September this year.
There are plans to relocate the Upper Changi Road centre from Block 207 to Block 208B.
Meanwhile, Ghim Moh Road hawker centre will be closed for refurbishment works lasting 15 months.
A temporary centre, expected to be completed in October, is set to house the Ghim Moh hawkers during the closure. - CNA/nd
