K Shanmugam: Securing our collective future through poverty eradication and sustainable development.
Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam says the only way to secure a collective future is through poverty eradication and sustainable development.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly 68th Session General Debate in New York, Mr Shanmugam said the world needs to rethink and retool their economies and societies.
Mr Shanumgam said Singapore understands this very well.
He said that when Singapore became independent in 1965, it faced several challenges.
But the government has been able to uplift the population by focusing on education and skills development.
It has also created jobs and moved the industries up the value chain towards higher-skilled and innovation focused sectors.
Among other things, it has also developed creative solutions to overcome its resource constraints.
Mr Shanmugam said Singapore will continue to play its part in assisting other countries via the Singapore Cooperation Programme.
Going forward, Mr Shanmugam suggested priority areas for the Post 2015 Development Agenda which include emphasising urban management and the intertwined issues of water and sanitation.
