Housing policies must support social objectives

National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan says new housing polices are working.

Almost 10,000 couples will benefit from the Parenthood Priority Scheme in January.

And among these 10,000, about half are already expecting a child, or already have young children.

In a blog post, Mr Khaw said there is also good response to the Parenthood Provisional Housing Scheme, which offers families the option of renting a HDB flat at affordable rates while they wait for their new flats to be ready.

Since the launch of the scheme, nearly 800 flats have been taken up.

And eligible families can apply for the scheme at any time as vacancies are still available.

Also with the ramp up in the construction of Build-To-Order flats this year, the first time back-log is largely cleared.

Mr Khaw added that he's guided by important social objectives when formulating housing policies.

These objectives are encouraging the young to get married, and encouraging couples to have children as soon as they get married.
