SINGAPORE: Education Minister Heng Swee Keat has called for a concerted effort from stakeholders to support every student to be an engaged learner, ready for lifelong learning.

And he urged parents to be active partners in their children's education.

Mr Heng said: "All of us at MOE (Ministry of Education) and in our schools are dedicated to giving our children a broad and deep educational foundation that prepares them for a lifelong journey of life and learning.

"We look forward to doing this with the active partnership of parents and anyone who cares about the future of our children.”

Mr Heng made the comments in a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday afternoon, ahead of the start of the new school year on Thursday.

He said he understands the anxiety of parents for their children during the first day of school, but believes that it can also be a day of pride and hope, even for the most anxious of parents.

Mr Heng reminded all those involved in the education process that children need love and encouragement to enjoy their learning years.

To students returning for another year in their schools, he urged: "Keep doing your best in school and at home, and remember to be helpful to your parents, your teachers and your friends in school."

Mr Heng wished teachers and school staff a great new year of filling and shaping young minds, and said he looks forward to working with all to prepare the children for the future. - CNA/nd
