HDB suggests debarking to dog owners

HDB suggests debarking to dog owners

A dog welfare group Action for Singapore Dogs, or ASD, has spoken out against the Housing Development Board for its "debarking" suggestion to dog owners.

In a notice dated August the 22nd sent out to residents, HDB said it received feedback about dog barking in the middle of the night at Block 601 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5.

It added that if owners cannot control their dogs from barking, they could consider letting their dogs undergo debarking surgery.

In response, ASD said it strongly objects to the suggestion.

It described the surgery as "an extremely cruel and painful procedure of removing vocal chords which can cause constant physical pain."

It added that such recommendations should not be publicly put out without due advice from experts as it sets a wrong mindset that such solutions are ethical or safe.
