Govt will strengthen social safety nets such as healthcare
The government will improve healthcare financing to give all Singaporeans more peace of mind.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the medical insurance scheme, MediShield, will be revamped to become MediShield Life.
It will offer universal coverage and better protection for large hospitalisation bills.
The Health Ministry will conduct a public consultation exercise before deciding on the details of the scheme.
Outpatient care will also be made more affordable through enhancements to the Community Health Assist Scheme or CHAS.
The current age floor of 40 will be removed so that young Singaporeans can use C-H-A-S when seeing a general practitioner.
There'll also be a new Pioneer Generation Package to ensure Singapore's pioneer generation is well covered and need never worry about healthcare costs in their old age.
But PM Lee also warned that healthcare costs will go up.
And Medisave contribution rates must go up over time as a result, as and when economic conditions permit.
