Government will support couples at every step of marriage and parenthood journeys: Grace Fu
Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Grace Fu, says the government cannot force Singaporeans to get married, but it will provide couples with the support needed at every step of their marriage and parenthood journey.
Speaking during the committee of supply debate, Ms Fu says Singapore's vision is to be a society where care options are widely available and can be used flexibly to help parents with differing needs to balance work and family commitments.
She adds that this is evident in the numerous help and support schemes rolled in recent years, as part of the Marriage and Parenthood Package.
The government has also introduced paternity and shared parental leave to encourage fathers to become more involved with their children.
Child care leave was also expanded last year to support parents when children need medical attention.
Ms Fu says moving forward, the government will continue to focus on finding ways to help parents balance the needs of their children and work.
"Overall, we have received encouraging feedback that the various support measures have given parents a greater peace of mind. The decision to have a child is a responsibility that goes beyond a financial one, and involves nurturing and caring for the child. We will continue to look closely at the needs of parents, taking in feedback and suggestions, and refine our support as needed."
