Government may need to damp down public expectations: Lily Neo
Speaking in Parliament, MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Dr Lily Neo says there may be a need for the Government to 'damp down' public expectations, when there are competing demands between the needs of service users and those of taxpayers.
For example, demands from the public that World Cup telecasts be subsidised.
Dr Neo says the main reason for the public's rising expectations is that Singapore has always delivered its promises with flying colors.
So to manage expectations, she says the Government may need be more discerning when prioritising policies.
"Considerations should also be given to the vulnerable groups of the society. These groups, Madam Speaker, may be the silent majority but their interests, though usually not expressed, must be registered. This also calls for good governance on efficient use of the limited resources to prove their value."
Dr Neo also suggested conducting studies to examine the public's expectation and level of satisfaction with the Government.
She says this is to ensure that people can appreciate what each Ministry is doing, rather than finding fault with it.
