Forensic scientist testifies at COI
Forensic scientist Dr Michael Tay is the first witness to give evidence at the public hearing of the Committee of Inquiry into the Little India riot.
Dr Tay was appointed by the Police on December the 20th last year to reconstruct the fatal accident involving a private bus that ran over Indian national Sakthivel Kumaravelu.
Speaking before the committee today, Dr Tay says the private bus, picked up passengers from a corner of Tekka Lane on the night of December 8.
He says the bus was filtering left into Race Course Road, at the T junction with Tekka Lane, when Mr Sakthivel's right hand came into contact with the left side of the bus.
Dr Tay says Mr Sakthivel then started falling onto the road.
He says the front left tyre of the bus then ran over Mr Sakthivel's right shoulder and head.
By the time the bus stopped, Mr Sakthivel was completely under the bus.
Dr Tay says the bus had to be jacked up to extricate him.
Among other things, Dr Tay was tasked to give an objective analysis of the driver's line of sight on the night of the accident, and to determine its speed at the time.
Dr Tay has 24 years of experience in providing forensic services, and his company, Forensic Experts Group, a private company independent from government agencies.
