Foreign workers in Singapore are by and large law-abiding people: Yaacob Ibrahim
Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim has urged the public to remember that the foreign workers in Singapore are by and large law-abiding people.
Posting in his Facebook page today, he said the workers are in Singapore to earn a living and to support their families in their home countries.
Dr Yaacob added, "It is a delicate and on-going effort to take care of the concerns of the residents and manage the needs of the foreign workers."
Dr Yaacob, who's also an MP for Moulmein-Kallang GRC which covers Little India, said "The safety of our residents was the top of our concern when the Little India riot happened right in our constituency."
He noted that the police have brought the situation under control, and that the unlawful acts of those responsible for the riot would not be condoned.
In the meantime, he said, residents and businesses in the area should go on with their lives and businesses as normal.
He also expressed appreciation for the officers from the police, the Singapore Civil Defence Force, and the Gurkha contingent, who were at the scene to manage the situation last night.
He wished the injured officers a full and speedy recovery.
