SINGAPORE: Five mothers were honoured on Sunday for their dedication and capability in bringing up their children.

They were finalists of the Exemplary Mother Awards 2012, organised by Jamiyah Singapore since 1993.

The award recognises the sacrifices and hardship mothers go through to provide a better future for their children.

The finalists are Madam Go Soei Hiok, 60; Madam Habibah Tamby, 45; Mrs Mubarak Begum, 45; Madam Noreha Daud, 49; and Madam Rose Ismail, 58.

The winner — Mrs Mubarak Begum — received the award from Acting Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Chan Chun Sing.

Mrs Mubarak got married when she was sixteen and persevered in raising three children in her teenage years.

When her family ran into financial difficulties, she helped out by taking courses and getting a job as a Tamil language pre—school teacher.

Mrs Begum won a cash prize of S$5,000, a plaque and certificate.

The other finalists each received a cash prize of S$2,000, as well as a plaque and certificate.

The annual event, now into its 20th year, was organised by Jamiyah Singapore, the Muslim Missionary Society of Singapore.
