Fire at Newton MRT caused by short circuit
Minister of Transport Lui Tuck Yew said the fire at Newton MRT station last month was caused by a short circuit which was most likely due to cable insulation issues.
He told Parliament that this will be confirmed by laboratory tests which will conclude in the coming weeks.
Mr Lui said that he is awaiting the investigations' findings in the fire to gauge if improvements to incident management plans where needed.
He was responding to a question by Nominated Member of Parliament Assistant Professor Eugene Tan.
Prof Tan had asked for the Transport Ministry's assessment of the emergency response by SMRT and the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
