Fewer immigration offenders caught in 2012
The number of immigration offenders arrested continues to fall due to tighter measures at the checkpoints.
The number, which has been falling since 2001, fell by 530 to 2,580 in 2012, compared with 2011.
However, the number of contraband cases remained high, even though there was a dip from the peak of 80,800 in 2011.
Last year, the number fell slightly by 600 cases to 80,200.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority attributes this to more rigorous and robust checks, synergies among enforcement agencies such as Singapore Customs as well as greater public awareness against smuggling.
