SINGAPORE: A former drama teacher, who had consensual sex with his underage student, has been sentenced to 12 months' jail.
Earlier in April, Aravind S Menon pleaded guilty to three counts of consensual sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between May and July 2009.
Prosecution proceeded on one of the three charges.
The 25-year-old ex-teacher became close to the minor when he was her teacher and they started a relationship.
Drama ensued when the girl said she wanted to break up with Aravind.
He threatened to post their sex videos online, which he recorded and kept in his laptop.
When the girl said she would make a police report, Aravind threatened to jump off the highest floor of a HDB block.
In sentencing, district judge Siva Shanmugam said the girl was at a vulnerable age.
He said Aravind abused the trust in him as a teacher.
What made it worse was Aravind captured their sex acts on video.
The judge said these warranted a heavy sentence.
But he also took into consideration that this was Aravind's first brush with the law and that the accused was remorseful. - CNA/ck
