Changes in education system to prevent social stratification
From next year, every primary school will set aside at least forty places for children with no prior connection to the school.
This is about ten to fifteen per cent of each school's enrollment.
Announcing this, PM Lee said this will give every Singaporean child the chance to enter the primary school of his choice.
It's also to ensure that primary schools do not become closed institutions to those without connections to them.
The scoring system for the Primary School Leaving Examination, or PSLE, will also be changed.
Wider bands for grades will be used, like those in the 'O' and 'A' Levels.
However, PM Lee said it will take several years to implement this change.
And at the secondary school level, the categories for Direct School Admissions to secondary schools will be broadened to include special qualities like leadership, resilience, character and drive.
