Cap on foreigners subletting flats to be decided soon: Khaw
National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan says his ministry will soon decide on an appropriate cap on foreigners living in HDB estates.
Writing in his blog, Mr Khaw says he agrees with MP Foo Mee Har on the need to maintain the Singaporean character of our heartlands.
Ms Foo had shared her concern in parliament about foreigner enclaves forming in the HDB estates and had suggested a 10 per cent cap for each HDB block.
Mr Khaw says in principle, his ministry has agreed to impose a cap.
But he says there's a need to balance the impact on those who rely on subletting for additional income, especially the elderly.
Currently there's no cap on the number of flats that can be sublet to foreign tenants.
Today, less than 4 per cent of HDB flats are sublet to foreigners, excluding Malaysians.
However, Mr Khaw says the proportion could go up to 9 per cent in some areas, or even 18 per cent in some blocks.
