Call for ideas to celebrate Singapore's 50th Birthday launched

How would you want to celebrate Singapore's 50th Birthday in 2015?

The Singapore 50 celebrations kicked off today with a campaign to call for celebration ideas.

Starting today till the 23rd of March, members of the public can contribute their ideas via the SG50 websitewww.singapore50.sg

Ideas collection boxes can also be found island-wide at community centres, public libraries and museums.

An SG50 Fund has been set up to spur widespread participation in the celebrations and support ground-up ideas.

Successful applicants can receive up to 50 thousand dollars in funding to bring their ideas to fruition.

In his speech at the launch of the call for ideas Chairman of the SG50 Steering Committee, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, says the Committee hopes to see Singaporeans take ownership of SG50 and organise celebrations and activities of all kinds.

He says each one of us has our own special stories, memories and hopes about Singapore.

Mr Heng says by sharing these, we will make our celebrations all the richer, and make this a truly Singaporean celebration for everyone.

Mr Heng together with Acting Minister for Community, Culture and Youth, Lawrence Wong, launched the official SG50 logo to signify the start of the journey towards 2015.

The SG50 logo is inspired by the concept of a little red dot, a familiar moniker that Singapore has come to be known by.

The commiteee says more than just a play on our island nation's size, it has come to symbolise Singapore's ability to constantly punch above our weight, and our tenacity in overcoming our limitations in size and natural resources.
