By-election is about choosing the right candidate who can serve: Heng Swee Keat

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat says the Punggol East by-election is not about voting more opposition into parliament or to further the interests of the opposition.

He said it about electing the right candidate who can best serve residents there.

Mr Heng said this in response to comments by the Workers' Party Secretary General Low Thia Khiang at the WP rally last night.

Mr Low had said that residents should vote for the opposition to make the government work harder for them.

Mr Heng said the government is already working hard to improve the lives of Singaporeans.

He said the support given by the people will not be taken for granted.
