SINGAPORE: By—election hopefuls from five political parties sent their representatives to collect the Political Donation Certificate for them at the Elections Department on Tuesday.
Treasurer of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) Mr Gerald Sng collected the certificate in the morning, saying it is for someone else. He will not say who the SDP will be fielding in the Punggol East by—election on January 26.
The party is expected to announce its candidate on Tuesday.
Mr Sng told reporters that the SDP has been very busy with preparations and will be focusing on hospitalisation and housing issues.
Mr Png Eng Huat of the Workers’ Party arrived at the same time as Mr Sng to collect the Political Donation Certificate. The party had announced on Monday that it was fielding Ms Lee Li Lian.
Singapore Democratic Alliance representative, Mr Abdul Jamal Abdul Rashid, collected the certificates for Mr Desmond Lim and Mr Harminder Pal Singh.
Reform Party chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam, who has also been issued a Political Donation Certificate, asked two friends to collect the document for him.
One of them, Mr David Tan, told reporters that Mr Jeyaretnam is "working very hard in Punggol East right now".
People’s Action Party MP, Mr Alex Yam, collected the Political Donation Certificate for Dr Koh Poh Koon.
Mr Yam told reporters that the party is "looking forward to a good fight" and is as prepared as it can be.
He said Dr Koh has been working very hard and had made a firm commitment to do his best.
