SINGAPORE: Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said it is a good sign that campaigning in the Punggol East by—election has so far been conducted with dignity and decorum.
He spoke to Channel NewsAsia on the sidelines of a community event, and said he has received feedback from residents outside the ward on the People’s Action Party’s candidate, Dr Koh Poh Koon.
Dr Ng said residents have told him that they are happy that Singaporeans have a choice during elections, and feel more comfortable that they have options to decide who they want as their MP.
Dr Ng said: "For Dr Koh Poh Koon, my residents are telling me that, well, he comes across as humble and understanding residents’ needs. But obviously Dr Koh will have to prove that to residents and be able to meet their needs."
Dr Ng added that the fact that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong thinks Dr Koh has potential for higher office speaks volumes about the candidate’s capabilities.
He said Punggol East residents will welcome having a potential office—holder to represent them.
Dr Ng said he thinks the four candidates contesting in the by—election are all credible.
