Brothers jailed for voluntarily causing hurt

SINGAPORE: In a District Court on Friday, two brothers were sentenced to six months’ jail each after they had their murder charges reduced to voluntarily causing hurt.

Dinesh Kumar Ruvy, 22, and Vikneswaran Ruvy, 24, had assaulted Rathkershahan Ananthan, 51, in August this year.

The victim suffered injuries to his head but did not seek medical help. He was later found dead in his Commonwealth Drive flat.

In his report, the forensic pathologist concluded that Mr Rathkershahan’s injuries were not fatal but if left untreated, could lead to a continuous loss of blood.

The pathologist also highlighted that Mr Rathkershahan was intoxicated at the time, and was incapable of making a rational decision to seek medical treatment for his injuries.

On Friday, both brothers — who have criminal records — pleaded with the judge for leniency.

For voluntarily causing hurt, each brother could have been jailed up to two years and fined.
