Part of Orchard Road closed to motor traffic

Orchard Road

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s shopping belt Orchard Road was free from traffic on Sunday as part of the Celebrate Christmas in Singapore 2011 event.

The road diversion took some by surprise but many were happy to soak in the festivities.

By 1pm, the barricades were up, and the traffic police in position.

About 20 bus routes had to be diverted to accommodate the road closure between Scotts Road and Bideford Road (between Tangs and Paragon shopping centres).

After alighting at Paterson Road, the only way to get to the shopping malls was on foot. Traffic however, was smooth—flowing.

The road closure continued till 1am on Monday.
