SINGAPORE: Between 2009 and 2013, Little India saw about 1,500 traffic violations by pedestrians and motorists annually.
During the same period, there was also an average of about 90 fatal or injury accidents each year.
Prior to the riot on 8 December last year, the Little India Bus Services ferried about 23,000 foreign workers to and from Little India every Sunday.
These figures were given by Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew in a written Parliamentary reply to Nominated MP Associate Professor Eugene Tan.
Mr Lui said to manage traffic congestion in Little India, the Land Transport Authority deploys enforcement officers and traffic wardens to detect and deter illegal parking along the roads in the area.
Traffic schemes such as the one-way traffic on Hampshire Road between 6pm and 11pm also helped to reduce the occurrence of traffic bottlenecks and ensure better traffic flow.
As for crowd control, Mr Lui said the Singapore Police Force deploys Auxiliary Officers and Security Officers to patrol areas where foreign workers congregate. - CNA/ms
