SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called on Singaporeans to celebrate the spirit of the pioneers who built this country, as the nation marks 50 years of Independence next year. Honouring Singapore's pioneers was a theme woven through all of Mr Lee's speeches in the various languages at this year's National Day Rally.

50 Pioneer Generation seniors, representing the 450,000 Singaporeans of their generation, attended the rally on Sunday evening (Aug 17). As they rose from their seats to applause from the audience, Prime Minister Lee thanked them for overcoming the difficult and dangerous situations in the country's early years, to build a sovereign, independent nation.

To mark Singapore's 50th anniversary - the nation will honour Singapore's first President Yusof Ishak, naming a Woodlands mosque and a professorship at the National University of Singapore after him. The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies will also be renamed as The Yusof Ishak Institute. Mr Lee said Mr Yusof was an outstanding member of the pioneer generation.
