SINGAPORE: In the National Day Rally in two weeks' time, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will talk about how the government will ensure Singaporeans have peace of mind in their old age, while the young will have opportunities to pursue their dreams.

Mr Lee revealed this at the Teck Ghee National Day Celebration Dinner on Sunday (August 3) evening. He said: "I will be talking about how we can help Singaporeans make sure that they have enough in their old age, how we can create more opportunities for Singaporeans to pursue their dreams and how we can create a better living environment for all of us. And build a better, brighter future for ourselves and our children."

At the dinner, Mr Lee also announced details of improvements that will be done in his ward. Eight blocks - Blk 330 to 337 - in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 have been selected for the Home Improvement Programme - which helps flat owners deal with common maintenance problems related to ageing flats. Mr Lee said polling for the programme will be in a year's time and will benefit some 1,200 homes.

Over 2,500 residents attended the national day dinner in Teck Ghee. They were also treated to a variety of multi-cultural performances by various grassroots organisations, schools and community partners. There was also a tribute to the pioneer generation with Teck Ghee residents performing a Mambo dance.

Residents also contributed their recycled plastic bags for the "We Love SG Flowers initiative". The floral creations are meant to represent people's good wishes for Singapore as it nears its 50th birthday.

Earlier on Sunday morning, Mr Lee joined around 4,000 residents and students in Ang Mo Kio GRC at a National Day Observance Ceremony at Yio Chu Kang Stadium.

More than 20 groups marched along the tracks of the stadium. They included contingents comprising members of the Pioneer Generation, National Service personnel and students.

Mr Lee, who was the guest-of-honour, also launched the Youth Sports Fiesta Challenge (2014).   - CNA/ec
