SINGAPORE: About 450,000 seniors can expect to receive their Pioneer Generation Package welcome pack next month.

The welcome pack contains the Pioneer Generation Card, which entitles seniors to receive special subsidies at general practitioner (GP) and dental clinics under the Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS), polyclinics, and Specialist Outpatient Clinics. Eligible seniors will be able to use the Pioneer Generation card from September.

Also in the pack are a customised list of the six nearest CHAS clinics to the Pioneer's residence, a CHAS clinic directory, a booklet explaining the benefits for the Pioneer Generation and a fridge magnet with hotline numbers. The pack is designed to be elder-friendly in terms of font and colour.

Beyond the welcome pack, the Pioneer Generation Package Taskforce is still exploring ways to raise awareness of the package to seniors.

Senior Minister of State for Health Amy Khor, and Senior Minister of State for Finance Josephine Teo visited the production site for the welcome pack on Tuesday (July 22) to check on the progress. Printing of the packs started at the end of June.

Dr Khor said: "We will also work closely with the grassroots and other groups, VWOs included, besides our frontline staff, to explain the package to them. The welcome pack is the PG card but the benefits itself, we will have to explain to them probably in more detail."

Earlier in the day, residents from Holland-Bukit Timah GRC had a preview of a new Mandarin music video which explains the Pioneer Generation package.

The CPF Board has seen a spike in queries since letters were sent out to seniors informing them of their eligibility for the Pioneer Generation Package. About 20 per cent of these queries are appeals from those who missed out on qualifying for the Package.

"The appeals panel is working very hard because they know how important each one of these appeals are,” said Ms Teo. “They intend to carefully deliberate every single one of the appeals, and they are also in the process of reaching out to the people who wrote in to ask for more information."

She added that grassroots organisations are helping to contact some 900 pioneers who have yet to receive their Medisave top-ups due to a lack of information about their financial accounts.

The Pioneer Generation package – which will see pioneers receive their first round of benefits in the form of Medisave top-ups from July – was introduced for those who were born before 1950 and who became citizens before 1987. - CNA/kk
