Commuters who wish to cycle and then take a train can now look forward to some 1,500 bicycle racks that have been installed across 10 MRT stations.
The racks can hold 2,500 bicycles.
They've been installed in Admiralty, Aljunied, Boon Lay, Chinese Garden, Khatib, Lakeside, Sembawang, Sengkang, Simei and Yishun stations.
The Land Transport Authority has installed the double-tiered racks to maximise parking space and meet rising demand.
But some cyclists may have to get used to lifting their bicyles onto the upper tier.
Security-wise, the design allows cyclists to lock their rides more securely.
Parking areas are also well-lit.
To encourage more to cycle and ride, the LTA says it will install 900 more racks at 10 other MRT stations by 2013.
The stations are Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Gombak, Choa Chu Kang, Eunos, Marsiling, Paya Lebar, Redhill, Tanah Merah, Woodlands & Yew Tee MRT stations.
Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim says residents have welcomed the initiative.
"It helps to enhance the living environment of the community. Especially for the elderly when they walk and they see all these bicycles parked along the covered linkways, they are concerned for their safety. It enhances the facilities for cyclists, it also helps other residents to have a better life."
