17 motorists arrested for drink-driving

The Traffic Police have arrested 17 motorists for drink-driving in a 3-hour operation that ended early this morning.
Police set up road blocks along Telok Blangah Road, Keppel Road, Kampong Bahru Road, Clemenceau Avenue and Outram Road.
Among those who failed the breathalyser test are 15 men and 2 women between the ages of 24 and 61.
The highest breathalyser test result was 82 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, more than twice the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
If convicted, drink drivers, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.
They will lose their driving licences and have to retake the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licences again.
First-time offenders could also be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, or jailed up to 6 months.
Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
They may also be given up to six strokes of the cane, should they cause death or serious injury.
