15 pre-school teachers recognised for promoting language learning

Fifteen pre-school teachers are being recognised for their efforts in nurturing language learning amongst young children.

They'll be given the Outstanding Pre-School Mother Tongue Language Teacher Award.

Among them is Chen Yi from the PAP Community Foundation kindergarten at Bukit Panjang Blk 226.

She incorporates unusual learning strategies into her lessons to make her students interested in the Chinese language.

One is a "magic tea box."

Children were encouraged to touch the leaves, and talk about their shape and texture,

before tasting tea made from the leaves during their meal break to complete the whole learning experience.

Rohaini Haron from the PAP Community Foundation kindergarten at Bukit Panjang Blk 111, is another recipient.

In a lesson about fish, a live fish was shown to engage the children's interest.

She complemented it with a Malay folk song about fish.

The awards will be given out at the third Mother Tongue Languages Symposium tomorrow.
