SINGAPORE: The LRT service for Punggol East was disrupted on Sunday morning for about an hour due to a signalling problem.

At least one train carriage stalled on the tracks just after 11am. Passengers stuck inside were evacuated by SBS Transit staff.

Normal service resumed at about noon.

Free shuttle buses were activated and called at all affected LRT stations.

SBS Transit said some 1400 passengers were affected by the disruption.

The company has apologised for the inconvenience caused.

Long—time residents of Punggol were unfazed by the service disruption.

They considered it a rare occurrence.

"I’ve been staying here for 6 years. During that time, the LRT service has only broken down about two to three times," said a resident.

"I’ve been staying here for 10 years. So far I don’t really experience any problems, except for delays once or twice in a year. The train will depart 10 to 12 minutes later, instead of the normal four to six minutes."
