100,000 flats to be refurbished within next three years
Some 100,000 flats will be refurbished within the next three years under the Home Improvement Programme.
The announcement comes from the Prime Minister's Office, in its addenda to the President's Address, to make Singapore a "Liveable City" and an "Endearing Home."
It'll also help young Singaporeans to live with, or close to their parents so that they can care for one another.
HDB estates will be made elder-friendly, and enhanced with parks and recreational facilities.
Technology will also feature heavily in the government's plans, as it works to make Singapore a Smart Nation.
They'll tap into it to develop Smart HDB towns to meet the needs of the ageing society, and increase land capacity through underground and mixed-use developments.
Chair of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Communications and Information Zaqy Mohamad has concerns about the emphasis on technology.
"This also means they have to ensure that those at the low income level are not left behind, and that we also provide them with necessary support so that school children are not left behind in terms of having access to mobile phones or laptops to communicate. Workers, especially those at the low education level, also need to be continuously trained to adapt to new technologies."
