Singapore office bully caught on tape

SINGAPORE :  A man has been caught on camera hitting a co-worker.

The clip, which was first uploaded on YouTube by user Shane M on Friday night, shows the man yelling and striking a younger man repeatedly on the head. A third man in T-shirt and jeans steps in twice to try to stop him.

The clip, which has since been removed, went viral, garnering 140,000 views in less than two days.

According to a report on a local Chinese tabloid on Sunday, the victim - who was not named - is a 29-year-old technical support staff. He has been with the company for half a year.

The incident reportedly occurred on May 15 at around 2pm, and was filmed by an intern at the company, known as Mr Yang.

When confronted by Yang the next day, the supervisor retorted that the colleague had said something inappropriate to a client and that he was “just teaching him”.

“Don’t just look at the surface. He (the victim) has an inferiority complex. I am just teaching him.”

According to Yang, a 23-year-old student from the Singapore Institute of Management, this is not the first time this has happened – the supervisor also reportedly grabbed the co-worker by the mouth and pushed him a day before.

Yang said he had already notified his school as well as the company’s human resource department about the matter. He added that he did not wish to continue working there and will tender his resignation on Monday.

SIM said in the interest of the student, it terminated his internship with the company immediately. SIM added the student has been offered assistance.

Meanwhile, in a statement released on Monday evening, the Manpower Ministry (MOM) said it was notified of the video via email on Monday and has been in touch with the intern who recorded the video.

MOM also reminds employers they are expected to treat their employees fairly and with respect.

It added that in situations where employees feel threatened, they should report to their supervisor or human resource officer.

If they belong to a union, victims of abuse should seek advice and assistance from their unions, and in the case of physical harm, victims of abuse should report to the police immediately.

A police report has also been lodged by the victim.

The Supervisor should be sacked.  No company can tolerate this behaviour.  I feel sad and angry at the same time if the technician is my son.

Must let the superior punish by the law and for the student he have to be stronger in future to protect himself by at least stop his superior to lay a ****er on him

What a disgrace to adults! Can't the authority do something, instead of allowing such bullying to continue? The victim must NOT let this thing rest too.It is because victims tend not to stand up for themselves, that the bullies got more and more bold. You don't need to be stronger to win, your opponent can be weaker than you in order for you to win the fight.

What the hack...watching this video ..it hurts me to see this young man being slapped by the supervisor. If he's my son I would definitely take immediate action to confront him! May the authority take the initiative to investigate and take action and have this idiot sacked!!!

Can the supervisor be jailed for hitting someone? I recall that gangster caught in a fight tend to have jail terms. Pick up the courage in the eye of law to fight against such bully. Supervisor is suppose to share their experience to the younger generation and not physically abusing them when they did something wrong. Everyone make mistake it is through the mistake that they grow and develope.

He not fix to b a supervisor, the young man should stand up n give him a hard punch.

Family member, friends and colleagues of the victim should help him to report to the matter to the police and punish the bully severely. Companies should not retain this kind of monster supervisor.

The supervisor must be taken to task.  This is no way to treat another human being.  The intern is right.  This kind of working condition is not conducive for anyone.  If this is an SME, one now has a better understanding why they can never get good people to work for them.

Even if the intern was wrong, the supervisor has no right to treat him in such a way. This is atrocious! There should be a course of action taken against the supervisor; if not he will think that he is right for doing so. The intern is not his child for him to slap around as he pleases! He needs to be mentored not bullied!

Regardless of anything, violence should never be resorted! Even a person with inferior complexity is not to be slapped, worse is the victim is only his co-worker! We are living in Singapore, a well-developed country, which should not condone such an outrageous behaviour! Such action will only lead to 'A More Gross-cious Singapore'. The supervisor is obviously abusing his power. Hope the company will execute actions toward him.

The effectiveness of this HR is questionable.  can you believe they are not aware of an intern who has worked for three yrs but still under internship. And they are not aware of paying someone for three yrs but without an employment contract?  Yes, what's the name of this company......

The supervisor ought to be slapped and punched by his own superior to get a taste of his own medicine. Such uncivilized and barbaric behavior, he  ought to be locked up for good.

May 20, 2013 6:06AM
What on earth, this supervisor trying to proof?Either in my opinion he try to show his authority or
perhaps he think his fist is stronger. He is very lucky he met with a timid person. If for me.he will in deep **** or may be landed some where ( for him to think ).

If an employee is making repeated mistakes any doesn't change. Just dismiss him. There is no need for such violence.
