Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Friday unveiled Budget 2014 which builds on economic and social strategies in recent years aimed at building a fair and equitable society.

It also gave special recognition to our pioneer generation, who helped build the nation in their younger years, by putting aside S$8 billion to fund lifelong benefits, including healthcare, for them.

Older Singaporeans who do not qualify for the Pioneer Generation Package were not forgotten. They too, will get subsidies with top-ups to their Medisave accounts of between S$100 to S$200 annually for the next 5 years, as well as a one-off Goods and Services Tax (GST) Voucher of up to S$250.

HDB households will also receive a one-off GST Voucher of between $90 to $260, as well as Service and Conservancy Charges rebates, to help cope with the cost of living.

As for the young, there will be more assistance with kindergarten fees, while more tertiary students will benefit from the increased bursaries.
