Hosni Mubarak resigned as president of Egypt after almost thirty years of authoritarian rule, following weeks of demonstrations against his rule around Egypt, with the focus of the protests centred around Cairo's Tahrir Square.
The revolution - inspired by January's successful uprising in Tunisia, which forced President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali from power - was the most significant to date of the growing Arab Spring movement. The live coverage of the uprising from TV stations like Al Jazeera, and on social networking sites like Twitter, captured the world's attention.
