Free parliamentary elections took place over several rounds in late 2011 - and despite the violence that had led up to them, voter turnout was large and the vote was widely recognised as fair. Islamist parties were the main victors, with the Freedom and Justice Party - which has strong links to the Muslim Brotherhood - winning almost half the seats.
