The mollusk who could see the future, well at least football's, caused a stir when it predicted Germany's fate in the 2008 European Championships. Despite getting the final wrong, Germans were still interested in the octopus's predictions.

Paul came to the fore during the 2010 World Cup, when it predicted all of Germany's results correctly, including a loss in the first round to Serbia, and the finals to Spain. In fact, when Paul had picked Spain, there were Germans who planned to turn him into a meal in anger, with Spaniards keen to "protect" him.

After the World Cup, Paul retired from predicting and went back to being a showcase at the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, before passing away due to old age last October.
